The History of the Department

Sacred Music...
Greifswald's Department of Sacred Music continues the tradition of the Greifswald School of Sacred Music, which was founded in Szczecin in 1939 as a seminary of the Pomeranian Protestant Church and was re-established in Greifswald by Anneliese Pflugbeil after the end of the war. There had been a Seminary for Sacred Music at the University from 1927 to 1940. The Department of Sacred Music and Musicology was merged in 1996.

...and Musicology
At the beginning of the 20th century, a Department of Musicology was founded in Greifswald, which, under the leadership of Hans Engel, was not only a pioneer in regional musicological research. In 1940, it was merged with the Seminary for Sacred Music. There was an independent Department of Musicology and Music Education from 1959 to 1996. In 1996, it was merged to form the Department of Sacred Music and Musicology.
