Frank Dittmer, born in Emsland in Niedersachsen, grew up in Bad Zwischenahn, first studies and sacred musician training (C-Kirchenmusikerausbildung) in Oldenburg with LKMD Dieter Weiss.

A-studies in ‘Protestant Sacred Music’ and ‘Artistic Postgraduate Programme’ in organ with Prof. Michael Schneider and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Stockmeier at the Cologne University of Music.

Choir and orchestra conducting with Prof. Henning Frederichs. Assistant Choir Director at the Konzertchor Köln under the direction of Eric Ingwersen. Masterclasses in choral conducting with Eric Ericson and Morten Schuldt-Jensen. Winner of the First Prize at the II International Gottfried Silbermann Competition (1995) in Freiberg. From 1997-2002 cantor and organist at St Nikolai Stralsund and director of the St Nikolai Bach Choir.

From 2002 cathedral organist at St Nikolai Cathedral in Greifswald and regional church music director of the Pomeranian Protestant Church. From 2009 to 2021 State Church Music Director in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, since 2012 in the Mecklenburg and Pomerania branch of the Protestant-Lutheran Church in Northern Germany. Appointed Honorary Professor by the University of Greifswald in 2011.

Juror at the German Choir Competition and the International Singing Competition cantateBach! Regular provision of choir workshops and singing weeks organised by the Kirchenchorwerk der Nordkirche. Radio recordings on WDR and NDR as well as CD recordings document his artistic work. Concerts at home (i.e. in Germany) and abroad. Publication of an edition of choral literature by Strube Verlag Munich.

Appointed Professor of Sacred Music with a Focus on Choral Conducting at the Department of Sacred Music and Musicology at the University of Greifswald on 1 April 2021.
